Roni Size & Dj Die - Music Box (sigma Rmx)
Cast your mind back, back before the days of relentless mid-range synths and overpoweringly compressed beats, when drum & bass was all about the refreshing sound of chopped up breaks and weighty basslines mingled lovingly with musical elements cunningly borrowed from the producers record collection. Well those days are about to be revisited as one of modern day d&b’s hottest acts, sigma, reworks one of full cycles biggest classics, roni size & dj dies’s “music box”, and what a tasteful reworking they offer up too; keeping the irrepressible feel good vibes of the original and simply tweaking the production for today’s fans. On the flip you’re treated to an opportunity to get your hands on a freshly re-mastered version of the sought after original mix, sounding even crisper than it did 15 years ago!
Sigma - Something Special
On the flip, Something Special is exactly that. A swirling LFO bassline, anthemic vocal hooks and a catchy lead riff are driven by the battering drums and all-engulfing bass we’ve come to expect from the Sigma camp. Evoking Bukem, High Contrast and A.I: this track has the delicacy to work on the ear and the strength to work on the floor.
Sigma - El Presidente VIP
The first 12″ features an eagerly anticipated VIP mix of their Bingo Records smasher: El Presidente. Andy C, Friction, Hype, Roni Size, Chase & Status, Subfocus, TC and Annie Mac have all been battering this track and it’s easy to see why. The infectious riff, house organs and snarling reeses still feature, but the effect is tougher, with stomping drums and a weightier bassline adding to the menace. Then, 32 bars in, it all goes seven shades of stupid – switching into a half-time monster, borrowing its rhythmic swagger from the world of dancehall. Features on an Essential mix, Plays on just about every rave tape pack last year, and plenty of Radio 1 air time make this a must have for every DJ.
